About me

Father. Geek. Cook.

Father

Quite possibly the very best thing that ever happened to me, fatherhood. I’ve learnt an awful lot about how the world works, and about myself, in the last 9-odd years. Everyone should do it ;)

Geek

Strong preference for (F)OSS (I’ve joined the herd and run Ubuntu). I follow the Canterbury Linux Users’ Group, and attend the meeting when other commitments allow. No matter how hard I try I just can’t understand Microsoft Windows or those that choose to use it.

Sadly doing quite a bit of Java dev work these days, but pining for Ruby, wanting to do a bit of Python, and still haven’t got around to teaching myself Lisp. Apparently Erlang’s cool too, so maybe add that to the list …

Cook

Not a chef, but I enjoy getting something edible after a few minutes or hours work. Baking’s always a good way to spend the time. The kids have food allergies, so there’s always some thought required when modifying a recipe to make it safe for them both.

Beer: good English-style ales and stouts are worth the effort to find. Emerson’s and Green Man both do some pretty good brews, and there’s one or two from Wigram that are worth trying. The Twisted Hop has probably the best beer in Christchurch.

Where to find me

I’m on Facebook, OldFriends, LinkedIn, probably a few others I’ve visited once. Links not provided — I’m sure you can find me if you want to. On InkodeR’s recommendation I’m having a crack at understanding that new-fangled Twitter thingy.
